These are the perspectives of a school principal committed to public education, interested in education policy, politics and innovation as well as a passion for many other things including travel and sport.

I have been a principal for 15 years and since 2006 head of Bendigo Senior Secondary College, Victoria and Australia’s largest provider of senior secondary curriculum. It’s a comprehensive provider blessed with some the state’s great students and also many who struggle to remain connected to education. We cater for all, irrespective of family background, income, social status and aspiration.

My background gives me an appreciation for the issues faced by rural and regional schools and an understanding of the power of education to transform lives and provide opportunity – as it did for me.

I’m concerned that education policy for the last two decades has redefined education as a personal rather than a public good, creating a segregated education system that fails not just kids but our communities.

I am also a member of the Board of the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority, chair of its Senior Secondary Committee and sponsor of the Victorian Virtual Learning Network.
